Equol in menopause
Equol is a metabolite produced by certain gut bacteria when soy isoflavones are eaten. Only 30-50% of women are 'equol producers' - their bacteria can convert daidzein to equol. Equol producers tend to get greater benefit from soy isoflavones for hot flush reduction. No easy way to know if you're an equol producer - try soy for 12 weeks to assess.
