FAQ · Sleep & Mood
Why am I usually tired after menopause?
Chronic postmenopausal fatigue is a common experience usually caused by combined factors. (1) Disrupted sleep - night sweats, anxiety, or frequent waking to urinate cause sleep fragmentation. Even if you 'sleep 8 hours', sleep quality is low. (2) Nutrient deficiencies: vitamin D (>50% Malaysian women deficient), iron (mild anaemia), B12, magnesium - all can cause fatigue. Comprehensive blood test recommended. (3) Thyroid issues - underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) very common in perimenopause and postmenopause but often undiagnosed. A TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test is essential. (4) Chronic high cortisol from mid-life stress - causes a 'wired but tired' feeling of exhaustion but inability to sleep. (5) Sarcopenia - muscle loss reduces overall energy. Approach: comprehensive blood test (TSH, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, fasting glucose, lipids) with your doctor. Treatment: vitamin D 5000 IU repletion if deficient, B12 if low, thyroid treatment if needed. Support supplements: ashwagandha KSM-66 for cortisol/energy, magnesium glycinate for sleep. Resistance training 2-3x weekly - paradoxical but exercise increases energy more than excessive rest. Sleep 7-8 hours with bedroom 22-24°C. If fatigue severe and persistent despite this approach, see obstetrics and gynaecology specialist - sometimes hormone replacement therapy helps when symptoms driven by severe estrogen deficiency.
