Finding the right specialist can be a challenge. This guide walks you through your options, costs, and how to prepare for your first visit.
Types of specialist to consider
Obstetrics and gynaecology with menopause interest
The first choice. An Obstetrics & Gynaecology specialist with additional focus on menopause. Can prescribe hormone replacement therapy, perform comprehensive exams, manage complications.
Endocrinologist
Suitable for women with complex hormonal issues (menopause + thyroid, diabetes, or adrenal). Not usually first choice for uncomplicated menopause.
Family Medicine Specialist
Can manage uncomplicated menopause and start basic hormone replacement therapy. Good entry point, with referral to obstetrics and gynaecology if needed.
General Practitioner (GP)
Can start basic care, but for complex symptoms or hormone replacement therapy, referral to obstetrics and gynaecology is more appropriate.

Preparing for first visit
1. Symptom journal (4-8 weeks)
Track:
- Period dates and length
- Hot flash frequency, severity, triggers
- Sleep: when waking, how long
- Mood: 1-10 daily
- Headaches, joints, vaginal dryness
- Anything unusual
2. Medical history
- Current medications and supplements
- Surgical history (especially ovary, hysterectomy)
- Allergies
- Family history: breast/ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, heart, dementia
- Mother’s age at menopause if known
3. Questions for the doctor
- Am I in perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause?
- What tests do you recommend now?
- What treatment options for my main symptoms?
- Am I a candidate for hormone replacement therapy?
- What are my personal risk factors?
- What routine screens should I have (mammogram, bone density scan, etc.)?
- What diet/lifestyle do you recommend?
- When should we meet again?
4. Practical
- Easy-to-remove clothing for physical exam
- Pad if you have irregular bleeding
- Friend or family for support if you want
Tips for choosing a specialist
- Menopause focus - ask reception if doctor has specific menopause interest
- Communication - choose a doctor who explains well and listens
- Recommendations - friends, family, menopause support groups
- Online reviews carefully - can skew to extremes
- Second visit if uncomfortable - you have a right to a second opinion
Red flags - change specialist
Don’t continue with a doctor who:
- Tells you “just menopause, just bear it” without discussing options
- Refuses hormone replacement therapy without discussing your individual needs
- Pushes compounded bioidentical as “more natural” without evidence
- Sells extensive hormone tests for women 45+ with clear clinical diagnosis
- Makes you uncomfortable discussing sexual health
